The Wedding Kiss Weigh-in

You’re on the altar. You’re pronounced married, and offered up for the kiss. Do you go for tongue or keep it chaste? What factors into your decision?

  1. I’m with Drew Barrymore’s character, Julia, in “The Wedding Singer,” who says, “I say it’s the kind of occasion where people dress up, so it’s not appropriate.” Her solution to the open mouth/closed mouth debate comes in down the middle. She suggests that the mouths should only be partially open and concludes with: “Well maybe a little tongue. Not porno tongue, church tongue.” The description is funny, but when she and Robbie (Adam Sandler) practice it, it really is perfect. Their mouths are in a position where obviously there could be a little tongue, but no one can be sure except them. Voila: church tongue.

      1. My husband and I got married in ’03, and our wedding kiss was definitely of the soft, partially open, “church tongue” variety. We didn’t exactly practice, but then I like that kiss for many occasions, so we’d done it before. 😉

  2. I keep it simple. Mostly because I don’t like being in front of a crowd anyway.

Also, I want to get to the reception and honeymoon that much faster. 🙂

  3. Girl, at my age, I’m definitely keeping it chaste! 🙂 Factors would include the fact that I don’t want my mother berating me for being “scandalous” or my kids making those “I’m going to puke” hand gestures they’re so fond of doing. Also, the fact that I don’t want lipstick smeared all over my face, thus ruining my makeup and making me look like Bozo in the process. Yep, I think that covers it! 🙂

    1. Such the pragmatist, Bella. I hadn’t given much thought to the lipstick. Still, I have a hard time equating you with Bozo, even under the most severe smudging conditions.

  4. Bella’s comment made me smile. Of course, you don’t want lipstick everywhere. Simple and sweet, maybe holding hands while you kiss can convey the added tenderness. Btw, I really like this template..

  5. I would vote for a “first kiss” type of kiss. If your first kiss was crazy passionate, then go for it. If your first kiss was a shy, sweet kiss then that’s the appropriate kiss for your wedding. I know several people who made their wedding kiss their first kiss! They literally sealed their vows with their very first kiss. Now that’s chaste!

    1. kim/epiphany, I think the remembrance of the first kiss is a sweet idea. But I could never make my marriage kiss my first. To me that seems a lil’ risky. Thanks for the comment!
